First experiences with Debian on the OpenMoko FreeRunner //at 00:40 //by abe

I ogled with an OpenMoko FreeRunner since Harald König (of X.org fame)’s OpenMoko talk at LinuxDay.at last year. I knew that a team around Luca Capello and Joachim Breitner managed to get Debian running on it.

So when Venty told me that harzi wants to sell his nearly unused FreeRunner, I couldn’t resist and bought it just a few days later.

I played around a little bit with the two distributions which were already installed, AFAIK the original 2007.2 and a version of Qtopia. Called Venty with the Qtopia to prove him that you indeed can make phone calls with this phone, but he wasn’t pleased by the echo he heard of his own voice.

Since the included 512 MB microSD card surely is too small for a large Debian installation, I bought an additional 8 GB microSDHC card at digitec and then installed Debian on it.

The installation mostly went smooth: Partitioning threw a timeout error which didn’t cause any further harm than aborting once. A bigger problem was that the hint that you need to update the U-Boot bootloader itself and not only its configuration (called environement) to get it booting from ext2 partitions. lindi (Timo Lindfors) on #openmoko-debian (on Freenode) was of great help spotting the small details hidden in continuous text.

After having Debian booting I installed all software I wanted to play around on a mobile phone including a bunch of web browsers. But since I ran into a bug which occurs after a non-deterministic amount of data is written to a big microSD card, I quickly got annoyed by the fact that I had to wait for the 8 GB fsck each time this bug was triggered.

So I converted the root file system to ext3 by adding a journal. But whatever I did (reinstalling U-Boot, the U-Boot environement, regenerating the U-Boot environement from scratch, trying to load it as ext2 again, etc.) I didn’t get it to work anymore.

On #openmoko on Freenode, PaulFertser was trying to convince me that Qi is the better choice of a bootloader. Although its description didn’t appeal to me at all, I understand that U-Boot seems a maintainability hell and that a more simplicistic approach can have its advantages. But there was feature listed on the Qi wiki page which made me try it: explicit ext3 support.

After creating the appropriate configuration files and symbolic links in /boot/boot and flashing Qi over the U-Boot in the NAND flash, Debian booted again without problems and with a journaling file system. :-)

In the meantime I found a setup which suites my tastes:

• Matchbox stays my window manager, but I enabled the cursor which is very useful if you want to remote control you OpenMoko with synergy. I installed unclutter to automatically hide the cursor after a few seconds, so I see it when it moves, but it goes out of the way when not needed.
• Like on my EeePC, I replaced trayer with lxpanel, because it also provides access to the Debian menu system.
• The best compromise in rendering quality and resource usage is still NetSurf. So that’s my browser on the OpenMoko.

Next step will be to move daily usage from root to an unprivileged user.

As soon as that’s done, I’ll try to get Tablet Amora aka Tamora working on the OpenMoko, too. Currently it only runs on Nokia’s Linux based internet tablets (N800, N810, etc.).

To answer Joachim’s question in the comment: I don’t plan to use it as daily phone, but it may replace my old Nokia 6310i where currently my German mobile phone SIM card resides in. Use it mainly to have a cheap way to make phone calls inside Germany.

Traveling plans for the first half of 2009 //at 16:12 //by abe

Since the time between the years is traditionally family time for me, I never were at the Chaos Communication Congress. So I wasn’t at 25C3 either. All the more I look forward to HAR2009 this summer (13th to 16th of August near Vierhouten in the Netherlands), but also because, for the last three years I always have been in the Netherlands for one week in summer, sailing with friends on the IJsselmeer.

But before HAR2009, there will be a bunch of other events to visit and people to meet in real life:

• I’m looking forward to see @evan, @cemb and many other identicatis in real life at Microblogging Conference ‘09 in Hamburg next week on Friday and Saturday (23rd and 24th of January). Will go there by train.
• Two weeks later there will be FOSDEM in Brussels (7th and 8th of February) where I hopefully will meet Savago from the Amora Project and many other friends from the FOSS community. Will go there either by train or car.
• On 14th and 15th of March, the Chemnitzer Linux-Tage take place. I’ve submitted two talks for beginners and will be there with the usual suspects from Symlink (Venty, dino and P2501 so far). We’ll go there by train.
• Luckily not overlapping with the VCFe this year is the SPEZI at Germersheim near Karlsruhe which takes place on 25th and 26th of April. I plan to go there, maybe by train and Brompton, but nothing yet sure.
• The, one week later over the long weekend around the 1st of May there will be Vintage Computer Festival Europe (VCFe) 10.0 at Munich featuring Raffzahn. Will be there with the usual suspects. I’ll maybe prepare an exhibition (“Debian on dead hardware”, i.e. PowerPC, Sparc, Alpha, etc. or so) or a talk, but not yet sure. Will go there by (vintage) car as usual.

Then there will be the big summer holidays driving around in the middle of Europe with the 2CV and taking part in most likely:

• Sailing with friends from 31st of July to 7th of August,
• HAR2009 one weekend later, and
• FrOSCon at St. Augustin near Bonn another weekend later.

This also means that I’ll probably miss:

• DebConf 9 at Extremadura (Spain) from 16th to 30th of July (can’t get so fast from Spain to neither the Czech Republic nor the Netherlands with the 2CV),
• The 18th International 2CV Meeting at Velebudice, Czech Republic from 28th of July to 2nd of August (overlaps with sailing)-:, and
• Bünzli 18 from 14th to 16th of August at Winterthur, Switzerland (overlaps with HAR2009).

… at least unless one of the other events I plan to visit doesn’t take place as expected or my plans change heavily.

P.S.: Anyone thinks this amount of events justifies a Dopplr account? ;-) Or is there somewhere a free online service similar to Dopplr, but runs software under the GNU Affero General Public License like e.g. identi.ca and many other Laconica instances do for microblogging?

The days of my last running Woody are numbered… //at 21:29 //by abe

As many of the Planet Debian readers know, I bemoan Galeon 1.2 and therefore Woody. For a long time I haven’t found an appropriate browser replacement for Galeon 1.2 in Sarge, so I never switched my home workstation called “gsa” (Pentium II, 400 MHz, 572 MB RAM) to Sarge, since Woody was rockstable and just worked.

Though, after a few Galeon 1.3/2.0 rants, someone pointed me to Kazehakase, which indeed is a fine Galeon 1.2 replacement. But I noticed that Kazehakase in Sarge was in an early stage and the Kazehakase from testing (now Etch) were already much more matured.

So in comparison to Sarge with Etch I won’t have the problem of not having a mature and sage web browser in main. And due to security support for Woody ceased a few months ago and Etch is now declared stable, it’s time to reinstall my last Woody box with Etch.

For that, a repartioning of it’s two hard disks (8 GB and 40 GB) sounds like a good idea and so I had look, what’s on all those partitions where I once had a shot on quite a few Linux distributions and other unix-like operating systems. (Although I was already a big fan of Debian at that time, I wanted to look over my own nose and ordered a few CDs of free operating system at LinISO.de.)

So here’s what I found, never really used and will throw away quite soon:

• RedHat 9
• Mandrake 9.2beta2
• FreeBSD 4.8
• OpenBSD 3.3
• one more, not yet identified (or perhaps even never formatted) Linux partition

That should give enough space for an Etch installation without touching the Woody installation first. Thanks to Venty, I’ve got a DVD drive for that box, so I can install from DVD.

And for toying around with all those other neat and free operating systems nowadays, I’ve got my MicroClient Jr. named “c2”.

Das Web 2.0 Stöckchen //at 01:57 //by abe

Kaum bloggt man mal wieder, kommt einem auch gleich wieder ein Stöckchen entgegen geflogen, dazu auch noch zu einem solch brisanten Thema wie Web 2.0.

Also fangen wir an: Ich nutze Apache 2.0, Blosxom 2.0, Emberl 2.0, WML 2.0, CSS 2.0, Firefox 2.0, HTML 2.0, Debian 2.0, äh, moment, nee, so altbacken bin ich nun auch wieder nicht. Ach, das war gar nicht die Frage? Achso. Na dann wollen wir mal die eigentlichen Fragen beantworten…

Nutzt Du Social Bookmarking/Networking Seiten wie Digg, Yigg, Mister Wong oder Del.Icio.Us? Wenn ja, welche?

Kaum. Einen Yigg-Account habe ich, wenn auch schon lange nicht mehr benutzt, Digg ist mir aufgrund ihres Abmahnwahns unsympathisch, Mister Wong sagt mir sowas von gar nix und Del.Icio.Us finde ich durchaus interessant, denke aber nicht, daß es mir wirklich etwas bringt, da ich meine Bookmarks — sofern Zeit ist *hüstel* — selbst von Hand zu Fuß als HTML tippe und damit genauso browserunabhängig bin. Flock nutze ich dementsprechend auch nicht.

Nebenbei: Digg und Yigg sind für mich keine Bookmarking-Seiten sondern Newsportale. Und unter einer Social Networking-Seite verstehe ich Orkut (Ja, habe ich einen Account, aber vernachlässigt), OpenBC (das neuerdings heißt wie ein Filmchenabspieler für Windows, nein habe ich keinen Account und will auch keinen. Ich mache kein “Business”.) oder LinkedIn (wirkt auf mich noch viel mehr auf Business abgestimmt als OpenBC). Und gute Jobs habe ich bisher auch immer ohne solche Seiten bekommen. Das einzig nette daran, ist festzustellen, wie klein die Welt doch ist.

Schaust Du Dir Videos bei Videoportalen wie YouTube, Sevenload oder DailyMotion an? Wenn ja, was für Videos guckst Du Dir meistens an?

Manchmal. Meist dann, wenn sie sowieso grade im Büro umgehen und alle Kollegen gemeinsam vor einem Monitor rumlachen. Sprich, meist sind’s irgendwelche witzigen Sachen. Manchmal auch Filmtrailer. Wobei ich eigentlich außer Google Videos und YouTube kein anderes solches Portal wirklich kenne. Zumindest sagen mir die anderen genannten sowas von gar nix.

Kennst bzw. nutzt Du Flickr?

Kennen kommt man wohl kaum drumherum. Nutzen? Ja, manchmal, zum Bilder anschauen, die mir irgendjemand zeigen will oder über die ich sonstwo gestolpert bin. Account habe ich jedenfalls keinen. Ich war mit allen Webgalerie-Lösungen bisher unzufrieden und hab mir meine eigene geschnitzt. Web 2.0 brauche ich an der Stelle bisher nicht. Aber wer weiß, vielleicht bekommt das Ding auch mal RSS-Feed-Support.

Was hälst Du von Diensten wie Twitter oder Frazr?

Ich kenne sie nicht einmal. *draufklick* Nix.

Wie viele RSS-Feeds hast Du abonniert?

Ich meine mich zu erinnern, dass neuere Versionen von Lilina nur bis ca. 50 Feeds skalieren. Ich hab ein paar mehr, vermutlich so ca. 60-70 Blogs und ähnliches. Dazu noch unzählige Newsfeeds (wohl so um die 40-50, Tendenz steigend, vor allem Symlink wegen), die ich aber von den Blogfeeds getrennt halte und auch nicht mit einem Feedreader sondern so einer Art Cheesy Portal lese. Wobei es so aussieht, als ob sich bei Lilina wieder was tut, jedenfalls hat die Seite ein neues Design und eine neue URL. Müßte ich mir mal wieder mal ansehen.

Liest Du die alle täglich?

Nicht mal mehr monatlich oder sonstwie regelmäßig. Seit das letzte Upgrade meines Lilinas eine katastrophale Performance an den Tag legte eigentlich gar nicht mehr. Und zum Flicken hatte ich bisher keine Lust. Genausowenig wie ich bisher Muße dazu hatte, mein “Cheesy Portal” wieder in Sachen Feeds auf den aktuellen Stand zu bringen. Deswegen auch keine Links. Liegt wohl daran, daß mir die Arbeit seit dem Stellenwechsel vor einem Jahr wieder richtig Spaß macht und deswegen keine Zeit mehr für solche weniger wichtigen Dinge ist. ;-)

In wie vielen Weblogs bloggst Du? (Eigene oder Mitautor)

Da ich Symlink nach wie vor nicht als Blog ansehe (und auch nicht unbedingt den ISG Newsticker oder den LUG-Camp 2007 Newsticker) nur in zweien: In diesem meinem eigenen Blog wenn mir gerade danach ist (also nicht mit dem Zwang täglich was zu posten, wie manch andere Leute) als auch in der inoffiziellen Blosxom User Group, dort im Normalfall dann, wenn’s was neues (aber nicht notwendigerweise wichtiges) in der Blosxom Community gibt.

Kommentierst Du in anderen Blogs? Wenn ja was?

Hin und wieder mal. Meist bei Freunden, manchmal auch bei Leuten, die ich nicht kenne. Was es dann ist, ist recht unterschiedlichen. Von hilfreichen Informationen bis hin zu blöden Kommentaren ist sicher schon alles dabei gewesen. ;-)

Wer ist Dein persönlicher Blog-König von Deutschland der Schweiz?

Was ist ein “persönlicher Blog-König”? Jemand, der Blogs schreibt so wie das Klischee sie erwartet, eben täglich, mit viel persönlichem oder unwichtigem Zeugs? Hmm, in der Schweiz die RUBIs sind recht fleissig und viel persönliches ist da auch dabei, dazu ist’s noch witzig, weil praktisch die ganze Familie bloggt. Und informativ ist es ab und an außerdem noch. In Deutschland kenne ich zu wenige Blogs, aber da fand ich immer das Daily Ivy Blog ganz gut, auch wenn es als Blog keinerlei wirklichen Ersatz für Ivys Bar sein kann. *seufz*

Gehört Weblogs Deiner Meinung nach die Zukunft oder sind sie nur ein vorübergehender Hype?

Weder noch. Sie sind eine Nuance eines Mediums mehr, die das letzte Jahrzehnt hervorgebracht hat. Mit eigenem Charakter und nicht eigentlich kaum mehr wegzudenken, aber sicher auch nicht die Krone der Web-2.0-Schöpfung.

Wird es Dein Blog / Deine Blogs dann auch noch geben?

Es ist glaube ich gemeinhin bekannt, daß ich selten was wegschmeiße oder gar Webseiten lösche, nur weil ich sie grade nicht brauche, nutze oder pflege.

Und bevor’s zu Ende ist, füge ich hier grade noch zwei Fragen ein, weil ich doch das eine oder andere zum Thema Web 2.0 in diesem Stöckchen vermisse.

Welchen Feedreader nutzt Du?

Webbasiert: den bereits erwähnten Lilina für Blogs und einen auf einer PHP-Feedreader-Bibliothek basierender Eigenbau, der nach dem Vorbild von Slashdots Cheesy Portal gebaut ist — nur mehrspaltig, für News. Sonst Opera, allerdings nur mit wenigen Feeds. Ich habe zwar auch schon raggle und snownews ausprobiert und so schlecht sind die beiden sicher auch nicht (snownews ist einen Tick intuitiver zu bedienen), aber wirklich begonnen sie zu nutzen habe ich nicht. Gregarius fürs Web und Newsbeuter für die Textkonsole wollte ich mal noch ausprobieren.

Was gehört für Dich sonst noch zum Web 2.0?

Google Maps, maps.search.ch und Konsorten inklusive API. Könnte man auch unter dem Überbegriff AJAX laufen lassen. Dann natürlich Wikis. Und nicht zu vergessen Microformats wie z.B. XFN. Wundert mich eigentlich, das das vorher kaum vorkam in dem Stöckchen.

Wo gehts weiter mit dem Web 2.0 Stöckchen?

Also sicher mal bei Venty sei’s in seinem leider schon wieder aufgegebenen Gopher-Blog oder in seinem PodCast, dem ich nicht wirklich folge, weil ich keine PodCasts höre.

Dann vielleicht noch bei Dieter Schlabonski, weil der es sicher schafft, auch daraus einen stilechten Rant zu machen.

Und Myon bastelt ja bei Debian gerne mit Web-2.0-Methoden rum, dem werfen wir das grade auch mal zu.

Sonst fallen mir nur noch Leute ein, die kein Blog haben und daher auch kaum Stöckchen fangen können oder das Stöckchen schon bekommen haben. :-)

On Thursday, 24th of November 2006 evening (about one and a half week ago) we got an anonymous Symlink submission about gaia 0.1.0, a simple, but free (GPL‘ed) client for Google Earth, solely based on reverse engineering. Liked the idea of a really free client for such a popular service, so I posted it as Symlink article (German) quite shortly after noticing the submisson.

Since it’s under GPL and uses only libraries already being in Debian (OpenGL, SCons, cURL, SDL, libjpeg, libpng, libgps and Doxygen), I really would like to see it in Debian. But since I have never programmed with most of them, I did not try to compile gaia but instead took the easy way for myself and filed an RFP bug for it in Debian.

The next day in office, Gürkan, a coworker of mine and currently in NM, told me that he tries to package gaia for Debian and that it doesn’t compile on Sarge. So I gave him access to my Sid chroot and asked him if he has read about the RFP at debian-devel or debian-wnpp. To my surprise he answered that he didn’t read about it on Debian lists at all but on Symlink and therefore didn’t knew about the RFP at all.

So I pointed him to the RFP just to notice, that it wasn’t an RFP anymore but already an ITP. Strangely I didn’t get any mail notice about this change although the retitling happend only shortly after the initial RFP… Of couse, Gürkan wasn’t very happy about this, since he planned to maintain gaia himself, but at least he provided his working proof of concept package for Sid to Jordà Polo who intends to maintain an official Debian package of gaia. We then also met Jordà on the #debian-games channel in OFTC. He told us, that he’ll check some more licensing issues before uploading a package of gaia.

Well, since I had a working gaia package installed in my Sid chroot, you can probably imagine what I did half the evening? Right: Surfing around the earth with gaia and visiting my favourite places on earth. While virtually visiting places here and there, I listened to Venty’s first podcasts and seem to have downloaded 444 MB of Google Earth images (at least according to du -sh ~/.gaia). Goddamned addiction! ;-)

During the night from Friday to Saturday, I got a mail that the RFP/ITP has been closed and that Jordà was right with his suspiciousness: Google has sent a cease and desist letter to the gaia developers and they removed the downloads from their site. (So how was that Google motto? “Don’t be evil”? Well, good joke! Yet again the monopolist clearly shows that it doesn’t really mean what it says.) Since the gaia developers were allowed to post the mail from Google on their website, you can read parts of it there. I really wonder what was written in the left out parts of the mails. Job offers? ;-)

But it’s interesting to see that until one week ago gaia 0.1.0 already made it into the FreeBSD ports as well as into the ArchLinux User Repository. Both noticed, too, that gaia version 0.1.0 has been withdrawn by the authors.

Today in the morning Gürkan noticed that there’s a new version (0.1.1) of gaia at SourceForge using free NASA WorldWind / OnEarth imagery. Although the imagery is far away from the detailedness of the Google Earth imagery, this has one big advantage: There wasn’t really a X port for the windows-only client from NASA until now. (No real wonder, since they use proprietary and operating specific libraries such as .NET and DirectX…) And now we have gaia, a free client for free imagery on free operating systems. That made my day!

I hope that this will revive the packaging of gaia, at least Gürkan has already built a new proof of concept package of 0.1.1 for Sid. (Today in the afternoon, they released 0.1.2.) And if everything goes fine and Dunc-Bank manages to delay Etch until gaia has been 10 days in Unstable without bugs, we’ll have it even in Etch. ;-)

FrOSCon, COSIN und ein zu Kazehakase bekehrter Ex-Galeon-Fan //at 03:16 //by abe

Bereits zwei Wochen her, aber trotzdem nett, war die FrOSCon (Free and Open Source Software Conference), auf der ich im normalen Vortragsprogramm drei Vorträge und am Debian Day einen weiteren gehalten habe. (Die Folien zu diesen Vorträgen sind seit dem Wochenende nun auch alle online.) Wie ich schon auf schrieb (und von der Online-Zeitung doppelpunkt: der Fachhochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg bereits zitiert wurde), war ich von der FrOSCon recht beeindruckt: Dafür, dass es diese Veranstaltung dieses Jahr zum ersten Mal lief, war sie verdammt gut organisiert. Und trotzdem schien keiner der Orgas Stress zu haben oder liess sich diesen zumindest nicht anmerken.

Die FrOSCon hat in meinen Augen definitiv das Potential, um sich neben den Chemnitzer Linuxtagen zu der Community-Konferenz im deutschsprachigen Raum zu mausern: Eine im Westen, eine im Osten. Ich freue mich jedenfalls schon auf das nächste Mal.

Dieses Wochenende war ich auf dem nächsten Event, der (oder “dem”?) Chaos Singularity (COSIN) im Kulturzentrum Bremgarten (KuZeB), einem bisher noch kleinen, aber dennoch feinen Schweizer Hacker-Treffen, welches von den verschiedenen Chaostreffs der Schweiz, den SheGeeks und trash.net organisiert wurde.

Neben dem Wiedertreffen bekannter Namen und Gesichter habe ich auch viele neue Leute kennen- und schätzen gelernt. Ich muss auf jeden Fall auch mal den Zürcher Chaostreff besuchen.

Und natürlich habe ich auch wieder mal einen Kommandozeilen-Workshop mit Lynx als Präsentationsprogramm auf meinem Pentium-1-ThinkPad bijou (ein Restaurant um die Ecke hieß witzigerweise genauso) gehalten, der anscheinend, wie im Rückblick behauptet wird, dafür sorgte, daß »einige der Besucher […] in bisher nicht gekannte Sphären ihrer Shell eintauchten«. Beeindruckend beim Workshp war für mich, daß extrem viele Zuhörer mitdachten, interessante Fragen stellten und z.T. auch gleich selbst beantworteten. Der beste Dank an den Referent war aber auch hier wieder die leuchtenden Gesichter von Spielkindern, die gerade ein neues Spielzeug gezeigt bekamen. :-)

Direkt nach dem Workshop bin ich noch mit Folken ins Gespräch gekommen und er hat irgendwann zwischendrin mal über Webbrowser geflucht und als in diesem Bereich in der Zwischenzeit sehr sensible Person konnte ich nicht anders und etwas in der anscheinend noch offenen Wunde herumstochern: Und siehe da, ein weiterer Galeon-1.2-Fan, der von Galeon 1.3 und von Epiphany und Firefox erst recht massiv enttäuscht ist. Während ich über viel Konfigurationsgerödel mit gconf-editor und anderen wilden Sachen meinen Galeon 1.3 einigermaßen gefügig machte, bis ich Kazehakase entdeckte, ging er einen wesentlich radikaleren Weg: Er stellte auf links2 im grafischen Modus um. Als ich ihm dann nach etwas Zappeln-Lassen Kazehakase und die wichtigsten Einstellungen (UI-Level auf “Expert” setzen) zeigte, gab es ein zweites Mal an diesem Abend leuchtende Augen. Wieder einen zum einzig wahren Browser™ bekehrt. ;-)

Sehr gut war auch noch das Essen (Dank an Beni vom KuZeB!) und sehr nett auch noch die abendliche Beschallung mit Welle-Erdball-SIDs von einem echten C64 aus. (Deswegen einen anlachen werde ich mir trotzdem nicht. :-)

Und da Venty ja dieses Wochenende im Triemlispital lag, hat er mir für diese Zeit sein TomTom zur Verfügung gestellt. Für die Hinfahrt war das ganz nett und funktionierte wunderbar, aber auf der Rückfahrt (mit tiCo zusammen zum Triemlispital um Venty zu besuchen) hat es uns sooft fehlgeleitet, daß wir per Landkarte vermutlich schneller gewesen wären, weil ich mir dann den ganzen Weg einmal im Voraus angeschaut hätte und nicht nach jeder vom TomTom fehlgeleiteten Kreuzung erstmal rätseln mußten, was jetzt schon wieder schiefgegangen war und wo wir wirklich hin sollten. Mal ganz davon abgesehen, daß eine Ente mit Navigationsgerät doch schon sehr komisch anmutete und Landkarten da einfach stilgerechter sind. ;-)

Vintage Computer Festival Europe 7.0 ahead //at 09:50 //by abe

It’s only seven weeks to the most important vintage computing event in Europe, the Vintage Computer Festival Europe (VCFe) in Munich, which for the first time will be three days this year because of May the 1st being a Monday this year and an official holiday in Germany and some of the swiss cantons (at least Zürich). So the VCFe 7.0 will take place from April the 29th to May the 1st 2006 in Munich and it’s focus this year is:

I’m currently thinking about which old hardware I’ll present at this year’s VCFe. There are a few ideas flowing around in my head:

• Old x86 laptops (1989-1996). This was my exhibition last year, but ayca, my i486 Toshiba laptop is broke (probably the display controller) and the “new” Compaq LTE pony hasn’t been setup yet. Nevertheless, I’ll bring my (nearly) everyday ThinkPad bijou with me since it’s now 10 years old and therefore ontopic now. Yeah!
• The HP 9000 Apollo Series 400 I got from dwalin and dyfa, if I manage to get a NetBSD installed on that box.
• Buying a tux case but installing some old hardware in it instead of the current FOX board. On the other hand: There should be at least a Linux running on that box.

Anyway, I’ll be there, many other Symlinker (at least dino and Venty) also will be there. And I hope to see you there, too. :-)

Oh, and btw: One wish to the Debian community regarding the VCFe: Perhaps someone who’s familiar with the Debian m68k Port could give a talk about how Debian plans to save this port although the old hardware isn’t fast enough to fit the requirements for inclusion in a Debian release. This would give a really interesting talk about old and new hardware. Talks can be held at least in German or Englisch IIRC. TIA. :-)

Update 16:26h: I thought of this mail by Wouter Verhelst about how modern ColdFire computers could run buildds for a hybrid m68k and ColdFire port when writing this paragraph. See also this Symlink story [German] about that topic.
