Kleinere Neuigkeiten rund um Planet Symlink //at 00:04 //by abe

Mal eine kleine Zusammenfassung der letzten Änderungen auf Planet Symlink:

Tobias “tuxedo” Klauser hat vor längerer Zeit mal ein Update der Planet-Software gemacht, was einige Probleme, vor allem mit Blogs in UTF-8 behoben hat.

Allerdings hat der Planet momentan (seither? schon immer?) den Bug, dass in der Sitebar die Links zu den Feeds zurück zum Planet zeigen. Werden wir uns noch näher anschauen und dann flicken. Update 00:37 Uhr: Tobias hat’s recht schnell gefunden und geflickt. URI ist nunmal ungleich URL, insbesondere in Variablennamen. :-)

Eventuell werden sich Tobias oder ich auch mal Planet Venus als mehr oder weniger kompatible Alternative zu Planet Planet anschauen. Mal sehen…

Dann gab’s eine ganze Ladung Abgänge und Neuzugänge, die noch nicht erwähnt wurden:

• Marius “Jiuka” Rieder hat sein Blog aufgegeben.
• Mathias Weyland hat blog.weyland.ch abgestellt.
• Der Domainname zap.hausundhof.com ist nicht verfügbar. Und der Feed bei Feedburner gibt ein 404er. Kein Golfen in Herdecke mehr.
• Ventys Twitterfeed kam rein, wurde aber auf seinen eigenen Wunsch wegen Überflutung des Planets durch seinen Twitxr-Feed ersetzt.
• Der Hackerfunk Podcast ist seit einiger Zeit mit dabei.
• Das Blog von Ralf “Runni” Neumann (wer am VCFe war, kennt ihn vermutlich auch IRL) wurde nach dem CLT dieses Jahr neu mit aufgenommen.
• Gerade eben wurde das Blog von Dave “tL” Vogt, einem langjährigen Symlink-Leser.
• Feed-URL des Blogs von Daniel “h2o” Mettler hat sich geändert. Hab’s erst vorhin durch den 404er gemerkt, war also eine Weile faktisch draussen aus dem Planet.
• Bei Daniel K. Gebhart (aka con-fuse aka dkg) hatte sich IIRC auch das eine oder andere mal der Feed geändert. Er hat uns netterweise darauf hingewiesen.
• Sandro “feuman” Feuillets Feed wurde von Ignoranz.ch auf sein privates Blog umgestellt, worüber einige Planet-Symlink-Leser sehr froh waren.

Abschusskandidaten. Auch die gibt es. Beim Hinzufügen von Blogs sehe ich immer, welche Blogs Fehler schmeissen. Einige davon sehen momentan nach permanenten Problemen aus. Die fliegen dann vermutlich demnächst irgendwann raus, falls es keine Änderung gibt…

• blog.qolume.ch: Nameserver der Domain qolume.ch nicht erreichbar. Zitat aus #lugs: “Den qolume gibts eh nicht mehr.”
• www.sunflyer.ch: Nameserver der Domain sunflyer.ch werden nicht gefunden, weder im DNS noch im Whois. Wusste gar nicht, dass sowas geht.

Problem ist einfach, dass man diese Leute ohne DNS auch schlecht kontaktieren kann oder auf deren Webseiten nach neuen URLs für Feeds suchen…

Warum machen Leute sowas? //at 19:32 //by abe

Da bekomme ich doch von jemandem, der auch hier auf Planet Symlink schreibt, eine ICQ-Message mit dem Inhalt “ich werde alle chat netze bis auf skype deaktivieren und in zukunft nur noch via skype erreichbar sein.”.

Wieso machen Leute sowas? Ich mein’, kein ICQ mehr zu nutzen, das ist sicher ein Schritt in die richtige Richtung — den würde ich auch gerne mal machen, wenn nicht soviele gute alte Freunde ICQ als einziges IM-Protokoll verwenden würden. (Von AOL-, MSN- und Yahoo!-Messengern bin ich zum Glück verschont geblieben. :-)

Es stößt bei mir aber auf massives Unverständnis, sich stattdessen als einziges auf das proprietäre Chat-System einer unseriösen Firma zu verlassen, deren Vorgängerfirma bereits bekannt dafür ist, Spyware, Adware und andere Malware mit ihren Produkten zu vertreiben, deren Code und Protokolle durchtränkt sind von Verschleierung und deren Lizenzbestimnmungen der Firma mehr oder weniger erlauben mit den Rechnern der OpferKunden alles zu machen, wozu sie grade Lust haben, insbesondere zur Installation zusätzlicher, nicht für Skype notwendiger Software Dritter:

Sie erkennen an und stimmen zu, dass Skype-Software in andere Software und sonstige Technologie, die im Besitz und der Kontrolle von Drittparteien steht, integriert sein oder diese integrieren kann. Jegliche derartige Drittparteisoftware oder -technologie, die in die Skype-Software integriert ist, unterliegt dem Gültigkeitsbereich dieses Vertrags.

Wie war das nochmal mit Kazaa, was war bei Kazaa mit dabei? Was haben die Kazaa-Lite-Macher entfernt und deswegen Ärger bekommen?

Soviel zum Benutzerstandpunkt und dem gesunden Menschenverstand. Wenn man als Netzwerkadministrator mal eine sog. Skype-Supernode (vgl. Salman A. Baset, Henning Schulzrinne: An Analysis of the Skype Peer-to-Peer Internet Telephony Protocol) im Netz hatte, dann ist das Unverständnis für die Benutzung eines solchen Dienstes noch viel größer.

Für die Verwendung von ICQ habe ich doch noch deutlich mehr Verständnis, dort ist (oder war?) vorallem ein Bestandteil der Nutzungslizenz unschön: ICQ Inc. hat das Copyright an allem, was im ICQ-Chat übertragen wird, zumindest war das Ende 2005 Stand der Dinge. Die Lizenzbestimmungen von ICQ wurden allerdings zuletzt im April 2006 geändert und der von Netzpolitik.org zitierte Abschnitt ist in dieser oder ähnlicher Formulierung nicht mehr in den Lizenzbestimmungen zu finden. Was nicht heißen muß, daß dessen Bedeutung nicht nachwievor irgendwo in den Lizenzbestimmungen verklausuliert drinsteht. Dem sollte man sich einfach bewußt sein, wenn man ICQ nutzt. .oO( Hmmm, heißt das, daß ich für o.g. Zitat nun Lizenzgebühren an ICQ Inc. zahlen muß? )

Nichtsdestotrotz gibt es eine freie und verschlüsselbare Alternativen zu Skype und ICQ, bei denen man auch nicht auf die Software und den Goodwill (hmmm, das klingt fast schon zynisch an dieser Stelle ;-) einer einzelnen Firma angewiesen ist: Jabber (XMPP) und IP-Telefonie mit SIP. Von weniger auf 1:1-Kommunikation ausgelegten Chat-Systemen wie IRC, SILC oder PSYC mal ganz abgesehen.

Und wenn dann mal mein geliebtes IRC-to-IM-Gateway Bitlbee auch mal das verschlüsselte OTR Messaging unterstützt, dann juckt mich auch obiger Abschnitt aus den ICQ-Lizenzbestimmungen nicht mehr so sehr.

There were quite a lot of small changes in my personal e-mail, web server and DNS infrastructure during the last months. While for more than ten years all my mails came together on a Linux account at the Students Representatives of Computer Science (German: Fachschaftsrat Informatik, short: FS Info) at the University of Saarland and all but one domain was hosted at my former employer, now nearly everything (including this blog) has moved to a Hetzner root server run by me and some friends and running Debian Sarge for AMD64. Most of these moves happend divided in small steps during January and February this year.

Only one move happend a little earlier than expected: Without any notice all external mail to my FS Info account got lost in a black hole one hop in front of the FS Info mail server. It looks like the RBG of the Dept. of CS at the University of Saarland didn’t like my face —eh— mails anymore and just dropped them. No bounces, no notices. Not that I knew them as friendly and kind, but blackholing active e-mail accounts without notice leads to dismissal at other places. They should really go and hear alphascorpii’s BOFH talk.

So my long-time e-mail address abe@fsinfo.cs.uni-sb.de is no more valid and any mail there won’t get read or answered. But I don’t mind if you send any junk there, it’s not my job anymore.

For luck the hoster of my deuxchevaux.org domain, Internett, which I used for all non-university e-mail, changed the forward within a good hour, so I only lost incoming mails of about one and a half day (which was the time until I noticed the blackholing), namely most mails written to all of my addresses at 30th and 31st of January 2007. If you wrote me around that time and miss the answers, you now know why. The few people I expected mail from, already have been contacted.

So for the future, write emails only to abe@ either deuxchevaux.org or — if you can’t remember how to spell that (no, you’re not the only one ;-) — noone.org (“no one” as in “nobody”, not “no. one” as in “the best” ;-)

And so since then none of my coworkers can make fun of me because I don’t have root on the box where my mail is received. ;-)

One of the moves also gave me the possibility to get “my own” Jabber server, so the time with those two jabber addresses (abe@jabber.noxa.de and abe@amessage.de), where usually at least one had some problems with some gateways are also over. If you want to contact me using Jabber, use abe@noone.org, equal to my easier to remember e-mail address. ;-)

So there’s still left to move: web, mail and DNS of deuxchevaux.org and beckert.at (domain of my parents) and my old web pages on fsinfo.cs.uni-sb.de as well as Planet Symlink. And of course the redesign of my web pages, which I’ve planned since more than a half decade… ;-)

The infrastructure in my real-life home also changed: My gateway to the world is now a 266 MHz MIPS based ASUS WL500g Premium (which I named “pluriel” after the multifunctional Citroën C3 Pluriel) running FreeWRT 1.0.1 which replaced tryane, an as noisy (power supply fan) as compact Unisys Aquanta CP mini-desktop with a passively cooled 200 MHz Pentium MMX.

Last day at work //at 19:00 //by abe

As some of my friends already know, I’ve quit my current job and will start working at the Department of Physics of the ETH Zurich in May.

Today is my last day at work here and I feel a little bit sentimental. Most co-workers became friends during the last four and a half years and I’ll move away from a bunch of friends at Darmstadt and from some friends in Mainz and Frankfurt/M. And I’ll leave the Rhine-Main area just shortly before LinuxTag moves in. Fsck.

But it had to be. Although I like creating dynamic web pages with Embperl and Apache, I became sick of working with SuSE Linux, sick of developing with OpenLDAP, sick of developing web applications which must (also) run with Apache under Windows or with MS Access. Since I understand that for the success of my current employer the use of these products can’t be changed that easily, the only solution for me was to quit the job.

My new job at the ETH Zurich will be administrating mostly Unix systems at the Department of Physics as well as some Unix user training. I won’t get rid of Windows and OpenLDAP there though, but I won’t have to develop software with them. What I’ll get rid of is SuSE: I will have my beloved Debian around me (which I can use here only for building Debian packages for customers) and some FreeBSD (no change here ;-), too. So I really look forward to my new job.

Therefore I’ll move to Zurich soon. And since I have down there a lot of friends, too — not only through Symlink and the Linux User Group Switzerland but also people from the 2CV scene — it’s not so hard to the leave the current environment and jump into a new one. Another advantage of moving more southwards is that I’ll be closer again to the rest of the Beckert family, at least the part I’m related to. (The biggest number of Beckerts seem to live near Chemnitz according to Geogen, so perhaps I should pay attention to this when visiting the Chemnitzer Linux-Tage the next time.)

But I’ll come back and visit the Rhine-Main area probably quite often, not only for LinuxTag.

P.S.: It maybe that further blog postings about my move to Zurich only appear in the German written part of my blog and therefore not on Planet Debian (but Planet Symlink).

Neu auf Planet Symlink: Das FUCKUP-Weblog und ein neues Logo //at 14:20 //by abe

Sodele, nachdem Planet Symlink ja nun doch schon eine Weile existiert und Neuzugänge nicht mehr ganz so oft passieren, habe ich mir überlegt, daß es Sinn macht, auf neu aufgenommene Blogs kurz hinzuweisen. In diesem Sinne:

Seit heute neu auf Planet Symlink ist das FUCKUP-Weblog von Doener.

Der Name seines Blogs mag für den einen oder anderen recht aggressiv oder vielleicht sogar obszön (und für manch anderen VIEL ZU LAUT ;-) klingen, ist aber ein Literaturzitat aus der Illuminatus-Trilogie: “FUCKUP (First Universal Cybernetic-Kinetic Ultra-Micro Programmer) ist der fiktive Computer von Captain Hagbard Celine. FUCKUP, der sich auf dem goldenen U-Boot Leif Erikson befindet, ermittelt ständig, mittels eines virtuellen I Ging, die Wahrscheinlichkeit für den Ausbruch des 3. Weltkriegs.”

Weiter gibt es seit kurzem ein neues Logo für Planet Symlink: Der Symlink-Schriftzug mit dem Planeten schlechthin statt dem Symlink-Würfel im Hintergrund. Idee dazu und diese auch gleich umgesetzt hat Jiuka. Dafür ein Dankeschön an ihn. (Und ja, ein klein wenig müssen wir noch dran feilen. :-)

Achja, und noch ein Hinweis in eigener Sache: Ich komm’ mir ehrlich gesagt etwas doof vor, als einziger mitsamt meiner Hackfresse auf Planet Symlink aufzutauchen. Ich hatte ja gehofft, daß die Leute sowas direkt miteinsenden mit ihren Bloglinks, aber da war ich wohl mal wieder etwas zu optimistisch. Deswegen hier nochmal nicht nur per Telepathie und Wunschdenken sondern auch schriftlich (oder zumindest elektronisch): Falls Ihr also auch Euer Hackergotchi auf Planet Symlink sehen möchtet, einfach mir per E-Mail zuschicken. Athen plans to ban SUVs from the city //at 00:41 //by abe

According to this Spiegel Online article Athen plans to “ban offroaders” from the centre of the city with the beginning of September 2006. Since the Greek governments argues about the traffic space these cars need, their drivers “only being posers” that have “nothing to do than driving around all the day”, I suspect, they mean SUVs and not offroaders. At least here in Germany, you usually don’t see offroaders in the cities, but a lot of Sport Utiliy Vehicles which usually just pretend to be an offroader (Wired, Guardian) but are perfect for parking with one or two tires on the sidewalk.

As outrageous as this sounds — it may have a real and reasonable reason: SUVs are usually bigger than other cars (especially in Europe), they need more parking space and have bad turning circles. They often have to back just to turn left or right in Athen’s narrow alleyways. Because of this, they are accused to cause most of the traffic jams in the centre of Athen

I’m still not sure, if I should believe this news, although SUVs are some kind of enemy concept for me. Why only SUVs? Why (AFAIK) also small offroaders like the Suzuki LJ or SJ? Why not being consequent and taking the Paris of ’50s (or ’60s? Can’t remember and Google and Wikipedia didn’t help…) as an example and creating a Zone Bleue (“Blue Zone”), in which only cars may enter, which have appropriate dimensions.

“Zone Bleue”? Back in the decades after WWII, Paris had problems with big lorries in the city, so Paris’ introduced the Zone Bleue (AFAIR) in the inner city, which was restricted to vehicles with a floor space less than 5m² or 6m² or so, so even some French car makers started build special “Zone Bleue” versions of their delivery vans with bumpers closer to the van body, tunneled rear lights and rolling shutter instead of outside lying sliding doors. And often high roofs for raising their capacity. (The only “Zone Bleue” van I found pictures of on the net was this Citroën HY Zone Bleue Pickup. You can best see the unusual rear bumper and the tunneled rear lights on the lower left picture.)

But back to Athen: Another reason which makes me sceptical about that news is that neither the Englisch Google News nor the the German Google News (also tried several other search terms…) finds any other news about this except the above mentioned Spiegel article.

Stöckchen fangen: Vier Dinge //at 01:27 //by abe

Nu mussich aber, nachdem jetzt nicht nur Priska sondern auch dyfa mit Stöckchen um sich wirft, und Jiuka seines auch schon recht flott gefangen hat. Übrigens haben sowohl dyfa als auch Priska das Stöckchen von der Thildkröte gefangen. Bei SvenK habe ich das Stöckchen als erstes gesehen, dort hieß es allerdings noch “Tag”. :-)
